Sharp shows 536ppi flexible OLED prototypes
Both 6.18″ units were designed on a plastic substrate as their base material and offered a resolution of 536ppi. According to the report, Sharp started production for the OLED display to be used in the company’s own “Aquos Zero” smartphone announced last October.
As in the case of commonly-used flexible OLED displays for smartphones, driving TFTs and OLED elements are made on a resin layer formed on a glass plate. After the glass plate is removed, it can be used as a flexible OLED display, the report says. Sharp uses low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) for the driving TFTs and the OLED materials are attached to the substrate through a vacuum deposition method with red, blue and green OLED materials applied by using a metal mask.
The front-end process, which manufactures driving TFT boards (backplanes), is carried out at Sharp’s Mie Plant (Taki-cho, Mie Prefecture) while the rear-end process, which vapour-deposits OLED elements and seals the panel, is conducted at its Sakai Office (Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture).
